{"id":1076,"date":"2010-11-02T23:10:01","date_gmt":"2010-11-03T03:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/?p=1076"},"modified":"2010-11-02T23:10:01","modified_gmt":"2010-11-03T03:10:01","slug":"runners-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/02\/runners-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Runners Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been quite a while since I last posted here about a webcomic that I read.\u00a0 Since the last time, there are a few I&#8217;ve picked up, and I&#8217;ll be posting about them this month.<\/p>\n<p>Up today is <a href=\"http:\/\/runnersuniverse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Runners<\/em><\/a>, by Sean Wang.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a sci-fi comic, with a partial adventure, partial comedy bent.\u00a0 The main characters are a group of freelance smugglers (known as &#8220;runners&#8221; because they run contraband around the galaxy), who find themselves getting somewhat in over their heads on what ought to be routine jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The series was originally published as black and white print comics.\u00a0 There were 5 issues in the first storyline, which were then collected in a trade paperback.\u00a0 Wang made the decision around 2 years ago to make it into a webcomic, so he started republishing the original issues online, one page every weekday for several months.\u00a0 Once that completed, he started a second 5-issue story arc in full color, which is currently in issue 4 (it was 2 pages a week for a while, now down to 1).<\/p>\n<p>The aspect of the strip that I think I like the best is Wang&#8217;s alien designs.\u00a0 He&#8217;s got a few humanoid characters in the mix, but most look very different, and he&#8217;s very careful to think about designing clothes, weapons, and other tools that fit well with the varying anatomy of his characters.\u00a0 It makes for a well-built world that sucks you in easily.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also refreshing that human types aren&#8217;t the main or even a main force in the galaxy.\u00a0 Almost anyone the reader meets who&#8217;s in charge is a non-human.<\/p>\n<p>The writing is also strong, with characters having very distinct personalities (even the minor ones) and good chemistry.\u00a0 There&#8217;s also a really fun sense of humor pervading the series.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t just funny, though, and Wang does still manage to have some emotional impact, and even some overarching menace lurking in the background.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend Runners for anyone who likes humorous science fiction or adventure stories.\u00a0 Check it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/runnersuniverse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1077\" title=\"banner_rununiv_468x60\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/banner_rununiv_468x60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/banner_rununiv_468x60.jpg 468w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/banner_rununiv_468x60-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been quite a while since I last posted here about a webcomic that I read.\u00a0 Since the last time, there are a few I&#8217;ve picked up, and I&#8217;ll be posting about them this month.
