{"id":1891,"date":"2012-07-13T23:09:07","date_gmt":"2012-07-14T03:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/?p=1891"},"modified":"2012-07-13T23:09:07","modified_gmt":"2012-07-14T03:09:07","slug":"urban-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2012\/07\/13\/urban-wings\/","title":{"rendered":"Urban Wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I noticed a falcon sitting on the fire escape of an empty building in Holyoke that I pass on the way to work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1892\" title=\"falcnest1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest1.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took a closer look after work, and saw that there was what looked like a nest in the top landing of the fire escape:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1893\" title=\"falcnest2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest2.jpg 452w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/falcnest2-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In that blurry cell phone picture, you can see the mama falcon just to the left of the nest, perched on the railing.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to bring my better camera to get clearer pictures, but kept forgetting it for a few days.\u00a0 By the time I managed to bring it, I ceased to see the mama there.\u00a0 Eventually, I think whatever babies there flew away, and the nest was abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>However, one of the mornings I brought my regular camera, I noticed a different sort of flying creature on the side of my building:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hhc-bfly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1894\" title=\"hhc-bfly\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hhc-bfly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hhc-bfly.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hhc-bfly-300x294.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I know this to be a butterfly, because it rests with its wings folded together (moths have their wings apart when at rest).\u00a0 I owe that knowledge to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2012\/03\/25\/wings-over-deerfield\/\" target=\"_blank\">trip to Magic Wings<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I noticed a falcon sitting on the fire escape of an empty building in Holyoke that I pass on the way to work.
