East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 4th I went biking in a big loop.\u00a0 I first headed south through the town of South Hadley, then west through Holyoke.\u00a0 I passed through Anniversary Hill Park, where I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2009\/09\/16\/training-hidden-in-plain-sight\/\" target=\"_blank\">biked a few years ago<\/a>, only this time I did not come out the way I had entered the park, I passed the tower and walked my bike through the woods on a dirt path, emerging on a side street further west.\u00a0 I then continued on to Easthampton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampmural.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2010\" title=\"ehampmural\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampmural.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Easthampton was once again this year doing a <a href=\"http:\/\/easthamptonbearfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bearfest<\/a>, with bear statues decorated by different artists displayed in front of businesses and in some parks.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a sampling of the bears I saw:<\/p>\n<p><a src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bearwarning.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one seems to be partly carved out of a stone block:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bearcaptive.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1997\" title=\"bearcaptive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bearcaptive.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bearcaptive.jpg 363w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bearcaptive-181x300.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That one was located in front of the old town hall building, which now houses a few arts organizations (and which I think is neat looking):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampoldtownhall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2011\" title=\"ehampoldtownhall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampoldtownhall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampoldtownhall.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ehampoldtownhall-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one (called The Bear Truth) was the most overtly political message, and the saddest bear I saw:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/beartruth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2008\" title=\"beartruth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/beartruth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/beartruth.jpg 386w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/beartruth-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I left downtown and headed for the Acadia Wildlife Refuge, which straddles the line between Easthampton and Northampton.\u00a0 I had thought that one could bike through the refuge, but that&#8217;s not the case.\u00a0 They do have a bunch of walking trails, though, so I spent some time walking them.\u00a0 Soon after I entered the woods, I encountered this elevated viewing platform up in the trees:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaplatform.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1992\" title=\"acadiaplatform\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaplatform.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaplatform.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaplatform-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The partly enclosed platform stands on top of a few wooden pilings, and is mostly stabilized by several guy wires.\u00a0 Despite being stabilized, it (and the metal spiral staircase that leads up to it) sways back and forth a bit.\u00a0 The motion was a little disconcerting.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it does offer a nice view of the Mill River and related wetlands:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1993\" title=\"acadiaview1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1994\" title=\"acadiaview2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/acadiaview2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t see much wildlife while I was hiking around.\u00a0 I saw the occasional chipmunk, and encountered quite a number of mosquitoes.\u00a0 Some of the paths were almost overgrown, as well, so my legs got a bit scratched up.\u00a0 I left the place a little over an hour after I&#8217;d gotten there and rode on toward Noho.<\/p>\n<p>On the way, I passed along the northern edge of the Connecticut River oxbow, and went over the mouth of the Mill River on this little bridge:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/manhanmouthbridge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2012\" title=\"millmouthbridge\"
