{"id":285,"date":"2008-01-06T23:25:34","date_gmt":"2008-01-07T04:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/01\/06\/2-pieces-of-overdue-cat-news\/"},"modified":"2008-01-06T23:25:34","modified_gmt":"2008-01-07T04:25:34","slug":"2-pieces-of-overdue-cat-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2008\/01\/06\/2-pieces-of-overdue-cat-news\/","title":{"rendered":"2 pieces of overdue cat news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is good news and there is bad news regarding cats in our household.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll give the bad news first, which is also the more recent news.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/toroidalsnark.net\/RZ.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arzachel<\/a>, who was the very old cat of the household, died 2 weeks ago on December 23.\u00c2\u00a0 He was about 19 years old, which is quite a bit older than most cats live.\u00c2\u00a0 He had survived many things which could have killed him, but avoided getting cancer (which killed both <a href=\"http:\/\/shark.seakingdom.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shark<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/shark.seakingdom.net\/nematode.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nematode<\/a>), or kidney failure (very common problem in older cats).\u00c2\u00a0 We discovered that he had congestive heart failure, and treatment by a cardiology vet ultimately couldn&#8217;t do enough for him.\u00c2\u00a0 The weekend before christmas he was no longer eating, so we took him in to end it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/rz1.jpg\" title=\"rz1.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/rz1.jpg\" alt=\"rz1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The good news is quite a bit outdated.\u00c2\u00a0 That is, we have a new cat &#8211; one that we got 3 months ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t tell anyone for so long because we wanted to settle on a name first, and that took a while.\u00c2\u00a0 We started with a list of possibilities, and tried them out on her frequently to see what she would respond to.\u00c2\u00a0 The final choice was made a few weeks ago, so I now present Deodat:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat1.jpg\" title=\"deodat1.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat1.jpg\" alt=\"deodat1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat2.jpg\" title=\"deodat2.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat2.jpg\" alt=\"deodat2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat3.jpg\" title=\"deodat3.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/deodat3.jpg\" alt=\"deodat3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks after Shark died, we started looking for a new cat.\u00c2\u00a0 We might have waited more, except that Arzachel seemed lonely being the only cat in the house.\u00c2\u00a0 We got here from a shelter in Springfield, and thought she might be a good companion for him.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, she seemed to be afraid of him from the get go, and even after she calmed down and started tolerating his presence, she was never friendly to him.<\/p>\n<p>She is friendly to humans, though, and likes to sit on our laps (especially at the dining table, oddly enough).\u00c2\u00a0 She also is a big ball of energy, and wants to play much of the time.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not too surprising, as she&#8217;s much younger than our previous cats were (the shelter estimated that she was a bit over 2 years old, making her 2.5 now).\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;s a bit weird, though.\u00c2\u00a0 Besides the lap-sitting at table, she also likes to run past someone who&#8217;s headed up the stairs, then grab the top step as she gets there, letting her momentum flop her onto her side on the landing.\u00c2\u00a0 For the first couple of months she lived here, she would spend a good deal of time under the couch, and in particular would squeeze under there when she see someone coming (it took a little while to figure out that she was playing, not hiding in fear).\u00c2\u00a0 She still goes under there occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>I have yet to put up a web page for her, but I will get around to it at some point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is good news and there is bad news regarding cats in our household.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll give the bad news first, which is also the more recent news.
