{"id":575,"date":"2009-09-06T13:16:56","date_gmt":"2009-09-06T18:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/?p=575"},"modified":"2009-09-17T21:58:13","modified_gmt":"2009-09-18T02:58:13","slug":"training-gimme-some-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2009\/09\/06\/training-gimme-some-sugar\/","title":{"rendered":"Training: Gimme Some Sugar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first training ride for the <a href=\"http:\/\/main.nationalmssociety.org\/goto\/sean_kinlin\" target=\"_blank\">MS event<\/a> involved going to visit a spot that I&#8217;ve been meaning to hit for a couple of years.\u00c2\u00a0 That would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/dcr\/parks\/central\/msug.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sugarloaf Mountain<\/a> in Deerfield.\u00c2\u00a0 I rode North through Hadley, picking up Route 116 and taking it through the town of Sunderland, and then across the river into Deerfield.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a pic I took of the mountain a couple years ago:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-577\" title=\"southsugarloaf.jp\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/southsugarloaf.jp.jpg\" alt=\"southsugarloaf.jp\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/southsugarloaf.jp.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/southsugarloaf.jp-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Technically there are 2 peaks: South Sugarloaf and North Sugarloaf.\u00c2\u00a0 Pictured above is the South peak (seen from the river bridge), which is the one that has a road climbing it.<\/p>\n<p>Having never been up that road before, I didn&#8217;t know what to expect.\u00c2\u00a0 It turned out to be a somewhat steep climb.\u00c2\u00a0 Thus, I had to stop and rest several times (maybe 7 times before I reached the top).\u00c2\u00a0 My legs were definitely up to the task, but I&#8217;d have to stop after a relatively short stint of riding because I&#8217;d be short of breath with my heart pounding.\u00c2\u00a0 A few minutes&#8217; Norwattuck (left) and Bare Mountain (right), which are near our house:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-578\" title=\"nonobare\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/nonobare.jpg\" alt=\"nonobare\" width=\"550\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/nonobare.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/nonobare-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How close are they?\u00c2\u00a0 I could walk from home to the summit of Bare Mt. in about an hour if I wanted to (in fact, I should do that sometime).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Mt. Holyoke on the right (look for more about it in a future post):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-586\" title=\"westholy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/westholy.jpg\" alt=\"westholy\" width=\"550\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/westholy.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/westholy-300x79.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then this is the Mt.
