{"id":688,"date":"2009-09-16T22:58:17","date_gmt":"2009-09-17T03:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/?p=688"},"modified":"2009-09-17T21:51:32","modified_gmt":"2009-09-18T02:51:32","slug":"training-hidden-in-plain-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2009\/09\/16\/training-hidden-in-plain-sight\/","title":{"rendered":"Training: Hidden in Plain Sight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went for a ride on Labor Day, and my main destination was a place that&#8217;s not very well-known around here, and even less visited.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll get to that in a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 First, I headed over to Northampton and checked out the new bike trail that runs North-South along the train tracks:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-697\" title=\"newpath\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/newpath.jpg\" alt=\"newpath\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/newpath.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/newpath-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It seems that it&#8217;s not quite finished, as you can tell when you get to a bridge that another layer of pavement is needed for things to line up.\u00c2\u00a0 There are 2 bridges on this section of trail &#8211; one over North St.:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-698\" title=\"northbridge\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/northbridge.jpg\" alt=\"northbridge\" width=\"550\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/northbridge.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/northbridge-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and one over Main St.:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-694\" title=\"mainbridge\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mainbridge.jpg\" alt=\"mainbridge\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mainbridge.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mainbridge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though both of them say the path is closed, neither has any barriers, so I rode across them both (and I wasn&#8217;t the only one).\u00c2\u00a0 After crossing Main Street, the trail passes along the &#8220;back&#8221; side of downtown Noho, mainly passing a couple of parking lots.\u00c2\u00a0 It then heads West, passing a corner of the Smith College campus and crossing the Mill River on another new bridge:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-695\" title=\"millbridge\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millbridge.jpg\" alt=\"millbridge\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millbridge.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millbridge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That bridge replaced an old railroad trestle.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking down, you can see that it uses the same supports as the train bridge did:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-713\" title=\"support\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/support.jpg\" alt=\"support\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/support.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/support-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the river flowing South from under the bridge:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-696\" title=\"millriv\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millriv.jpg\" alt=\"millriv\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millriv.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/millriv-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Soon after that, the path comes to an end (until they do more construction), and dumps one on Earl St.\u00c2\u00a0 a short block from there put me on Route 10, which I followed Southwest to the town of Easthampton.\u00c2\u00a0 In Easthampton center, there&#8217;s a nice pond that&#8217;s fed by (or feeds into) the Manhan River.\u00c2\u00a0 I sat on a bench by the pond to have lunch.\u00c2\u00a0 This was my view:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-690\" title=\"ehampond\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/ehampond.jpg\" alt=\"ehampond\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/ehampond.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/ehampond-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just behind where I was sitting was a bear statue:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-700\" title=\"pondbear\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/pondbear.jpg\" alt=\"pondbear\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/pondbear.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/pondbear-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s part of <a href=\"http:\/\/easthamptonbearfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">this art project<\/a> the town is doing this year.<\/p>\n<p>After eating, I headed South on Route 141 into Holyoke.\u00c2\u00a0 This includes climbing a considerable hill just before getting to the Holyoke line.\u00c2\u00a0 I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/2008\/11\/30\/berries-and-ruins\/\" target=\"_blank\">rode up that hill last year<\/a> on the way to hike Mt. Tom, and at that time I had to rest 4 times to get up the hill.\u00c2\u00a0 I must be in better shape right now, because I only had to stop and rest twice on this occasion.<\/p>\n<p>My main goal was to head to Scott Tower in Holyoke&#8217;s Anniversary Hill Park.\u00c2\u00a0 I found out about it last Fall from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valleyadvocate.com\/article.cfm?aid=8653\" target=\"_blank\">an article in the Valley Advocate<\/a> (our local free weekly paper).\u00c2\u00a0 One first goes to Community Field, which is a little playground\/park that is easy to find.\u00c2\u00a0 From there, there&#8217;s a little road that passes under the freeway:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-693\" title=\"holygate\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/holygate.jpg\" alt=\"holygate\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/holygate.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/holygate-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other side of the overpass is, I believe, where Anniversary Hill Park officially begins, and the road gets a bit narrower as it heads into the woods.\u00c2\u00a0 The road heads uphill, and eventually reaches a cell tower.\u00c2\u00a0 From there, there are narrower (but still paved) paths that lead up to the top of the hill and the observation tower.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Scott Tower itself when I emerged into its clearing:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704\" title=\"scotttower1\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The area around the base is quite overgrown:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-703\" title=\"scottgrowth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seakingdom.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/scottgrowth.jpg\" alt=\"scottgrowth\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clearly people do come up here regularly, but it is not a place used highly by the general public, or maintained much by the city, as evidenced by the large amounts of graffiti, litter, and broken glass (do not go there in bare feet or even sandals).<\/p>\n<p>The base of the tower:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full
